MAKING ELECTRONIC MUSIC

Making Electronic Music

As you know, there are many types of music. But lately, there is one that is on an unstoppable rise. Thanks to the technology behind it and the simplicity in its production, Electronic Music can now be made by anyone.

As Now You Tech, we talked about the history of electronic music before. Now it’s time to talk about how to do it. Prepare your tea and coffee will be a detailed article!

Fundamentals

Electronic music is a broad concept, but any music that contains an electronic element can be considered as electronic music. Still, we’ll go step by step without being overwhelmed by the details. To produce electronic music, you first need to learn some basic concepts. In this way, you will have an idea of where and how to do research.

DAW

DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), an English abbreviation, refers to programs that allow you to work with audio on digital platforms. There are too many DAWs that we can’t fit here. But the most well-known DAWs, especially by professional electronic music producers, are Ableton LiveFL Studio and Logic Pro X.

Each DAW has its own pros and cons. As an example; While Ableton Live is more successful than its competitors in processor and memory management, its interface may appear confused by newcomers to music production. Similarly, although FL Studio has an easy interface, if your computer is not good enough, you may have trouble making a mixed song and you may experience sound distortions. Logic Pro X appeals to a much more limited audience, as it is only compatible with the OSX operating system found on Mac devices.

To put it briefly, if you are just starting to make electronic music, you can start with the one that is pleasing to your eye and move on to another one if you don’t like it.

VST

VST (Virtual Studio Technology), another English abbreviation, can be thought of as small add-ons that can be installed inside the DAW program. Where the music production program you are using is not enough, you can find VST plug-ins designed by other manufacturers and make the music production process faster or more efficient.

VST plugins are very diverse. Some can be used for all kinds of sound reproduction, while others are customized only for the production of certain sounds. Again, to give an example of popular VST add-ons in electronic music, Xfer Serum is frequently used by leading names of electronic music such as NI Massive and Sylenth1 Deadmau5, Skrillex, Diplo, Hardwell, Tiesto, KSHMR and especially in House music.

MIDI

MIDI is a technology created for music and paved the way for today’s electronic music. Thanks to this technology, the pianoforte has been transformed into a MIDI keyboard, and the drums can be fitted into tiny pads.

Today, we owe our ability to produce electronic music with just a computer, without the need for very large pianos, to MIDI technology.

MIDI also allows you to file and save note information about music in electronic media. A MIDI file, regardless of instrument, DAW or VST, functions the same as a score pad, and you can develop your own interpretation using MIDI files of a composition written by someone else.

Extras

What we just mentioned were the indispensable details in electronic music production. Now it is time for parts that are not essential at the beginner level, but which are inevitable at some point. This information will be very useful when one day you come from producing simple songs on the computer to set up a studio and recording.

Sound Card

Almost every computer has a built-in sound card. However, most of these cards are not specialized for music, making recording from different analogue instruments almost impossible. As we mentioned, the sound card is not a must for an electronic music producer at the beginning level, but it will inevitably become a necessity as we progress and want to make more complex compositions.

Although the technology has advanced considerably, it is still not possible to fully imitate the uniqueness of the analogue instrument.

Reference Monitor

Regardless of the subject of production, even the smallest detail that will affect the production should be examined carefully. It is the same in this factory and music. Some details are slightly more important than others. The reference monitor occupies such a position in electronic music production. Quality of the monitors alone is not enough. Also, its location and angle in the room where the music will be made are also important points. But it plays a crucial role in making sure that your music is perfect.

This is because the reference monitor allows you to understand how dominant which frequency will be. A bad monitor or placement can ruin all the beauty in the song. To avoid such a situation, testing before buying a monitor, thoroughly investigating and calculating according to the acoustics of the studio where the monitors will be placed are the steps that must be completed.
