Music Composition Methods
Part #2 Importance Of Drafts
We continue the series of composition methods that progress theoretically with 2 parts. In our first article, we explained the Concept of Inspiration and Inspirational Sources and Triggering methods. In this article, as Now You Tech, we share with you the Composition Processes and the Importance of Drafts.
First of all, the most important thing we need in terms of performing art is the idea of creating a good effect. It doesn’t matter whether the effect we have to create can be dark, positive, romantic, calm, etc. What makes an art product powerful is that it can deliver the effect it wants to give to the buyer in a determined manner. By Stable, we may need to understand the message we want to give, and even work a few times. So, in the final analysis, the effect we expect our product to arouse is certain. This has something to do with Beste and drafting. If you want to make a dark song, if you make a song with positive feelings, that would be absurd.
Observe the elements that create a dark feeling. For example, the muffledness of the sounds, the relatively low octaves, the choice of root notes, and the generally minor scales. In fact, it is not always necessary to proceed like this. Sometimes inspiration catches you in such a way that the song literally writes itself. You do not have to say that I should do that song today and do that tomorrow. It is a very good idea to take advantage of what comes naturally. I want to share an important element with you. To keep your horizons wide in composition and increase your productivity, I also recommend you to do song exercises by considering the concepts. For example, telling about War, Love, Sorrow with notes without using words. If you can turn the concepts into music, you will not be in a limited space.
To Have An Idea
If you have decided on the effect you will create, there is the part of Hearing Voices in the head. What is it to hear voices in the head? It means to compose as having an idea. If our effect is clear, you must put the first stones in place to create that effect. Open the project you need to do at this point, focus on the musical effect and the atmosphere you create. You will surely produce a few melodies and rhythms.
Then spin these melodies in your head a few times and observe. “Can there be a song from this?” think critically like that. Be selective even if you are an amateur. You don’t have to put every idea in your songs. If the melody you hear in your Dream World is not what you want, eliminate that song. Or even imagine another Melody. As the worst result, you will have a quality song with carefully selected melodies that you finish in 2-3 nights, not in one night. It will be as beautiful as a result. If you have an idea and have decided on our Melodic or Rhythmic ideas, we can move on to the other stages.
Create A Draft
The Arrangement backbone is an important issue. But our starting idea could belong to any part of the song, we don’t know. And it cannot be very intervened. Because the brain can make different choices about it. This could be an Intro, a transition, a bridge, Chorus, or a Melody you exit. Whatever happens, embed the idea in your project. If the idea inspires you, which you feel best. Strive to get the beginning of the end. For example, an Intro came to your mind and the project you are dealing with is a Trap project. This Intro must end somewhere and be connected to Flow. It should be designed to be the infrastructure of “Wars”. So an optional short transition between “Intro Wars”. Then it goes in the form of Wars infrastructure.
This applies to the background design for a Trap song with the vocal I sing. The structure of instrumental “Trap” songs is completely different. They consist of indentations and protrusions. To set the spine, start completing the idea in your head with a 3-minute song, for example. It should have a beginning, middle, and end. Do not start mixing and mastering a concentrated sound design while you work. An arrangement that you will create with ready-made sounds will also reveal your opinion. Your goal at this stage is to draft. Focus your attention on your soul and the melodies that come from you. Every mixer and every synthesizer has a stream of signals. I believe that composition is also signal flow.
Mix & Mastering
Effect i.e. Spirit, Melodic Rhythmic Idea, Draft, Composing Process, Mixing, and ultimate Mastering. This is a linear signal flow. For this process, you do not have parallel movements and diverging movements to the right. But if the record you get at the beginning is bad, it will be bad in the arrangement. For this, Mixing and mastering will not correct the song either. Mixing and mastering will still not recover if you have errors in your arrangement. You may need to go back to your arrangement project to fix things. If you take this as an example, it can be said that the composition mentality also has a signal flow. Because it is very difficult to even write a lot of abstract things.
We try to compose with these abstract ideas. Actually, the work we all do is very special. Therefore, if we put the process of transferring from abstract to concrete into a certain order and system, our work will be easier. Mixing and mastering a beautiful composition. The concept of beauty is discussed in all ways. The Composition Styles that will be appreciated by the general audience are certain. If you are not doing anything Experimental. It is not difficult for you to become a popular musician by following certain tracks. If your time is precious, I suggest you don’t mix and master a song whose design you don’t like. Eliminate that song directly in your mind. If your inner voice says “I don’t like this song at all,” don’t start the technical side of the song at all. Because it will be a waste of time.
Two things are important here;
- If you like the song you made, mix if you want. Share that song if you want. Sell that song if you want. This is the important part anyway. But if there are songs that you don’t like and don’t own, don’t waste time with those songs.
- If your time is short, mix and master the songs you want to crown. There is also a motivational side to this. It would also be difficult to finish a piece that doesn’t get full marks from you. Mixing and Mastering that song is also difficult. In art, if something doesn’t motivate you, don’t bother with it too much.
It is also very important to fit the Orchestration well. For example, it is necessary to determine the instruments that will make up a song. My advice to you in this regard is to research the musical field you are interested in in your spare time. If you are making electronic-oriented music, what are Leads, Bass Sounds, Pads, Melids, Plug Sounds? What are their structures and feelings? There are voices collected under the main titles in the Presets section of the synthesizers. Almost all Synthesizers on the market categorize sounds using the same titles.
This will speed up your orchestration process in the future. You start thinking with sounds after a certain place. For example, the first melody may come to your mind, Rhythm. Or it may sound like Bassline, it doesn’t matter. If the melody came first, pour it directly into the project, then check it out. Is the rhythm coming to your mind afterward? Bassline? Listen to your inner voice. Whatever comes to mind, build it in order. If the rhythm comes first, a melody can be written on it. The important thing is to be able to hear whatever comes from you and to convey it. If you have placed these three important ideas at the beginning, you are most comfortable afterward.
Leave all transitions and automation to the last. Sometimes you may even need to use predictions. Because you may need automation to catch some sounds that come to mind. Make a note of the “automation” idea. After removing the main part of the sound, you apply automation. Generally speaking, sketching is one such process. Our job is to design. Going by finishing a song is like walking blindly or running blind. Progressing by anticipating planning and mastering gives you the ability to control and consciousness over the song.
They have aesthetic concerns, but focusing too much on them can be a deterrent. So the desire to create something beautiful seems painful. It even feels painful, but if you are happy with what you are doing, go for it. If you focus on what you fear, you’ll stay there. You don’t have to choose a style or genre. It will be helpful for you to determine your style at first. At least the stylized movements under the genre name have been determined by other artists around the world. Following them can add a lot to you. Listen to music constantly, take notes, pay attention to transitions, and traffic.
