Starting her DJ career in January 2019, Shaiflai (aka Shai) has shared the stage with industry bigwigs such as Ran Salman, Stimming, Dauwd, Cinthie, Fake Mood, Dizharmonia, Praveen Achary, Ankytrixx, Jitter, Unnayanaa, Catching Flies, Funkagenda, and many other homegrown artists carving quite a following for herself. She has performed live in several cities across the country and made live mixes for national and international labels.
Her style of music is often described as Deep House, Techno, Electronica, and its sub-genres that are groovy, ethnic, and intermittently anxious. She finds herself resonating with the playfulness aspect of music. All this comes from her own discoveries and influences such as BT, Telepopmusik, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Booka Shade, Justice to Groove Armada, Four Tet, Stavroz, Butch, Madmotormiquel, James Zabiela, Whitesquare, Doyeq, Solomun, and Ron Flatter.
She feels drawn towards concepts that are a bit untraditional and left-field, finding bits of happiness in melancholy, sparking a cerebral reaction when there is a blend of opposing elements crafted tastefully, like a morbid greasy bass line laced with stirring organic atmospheres, creating a sense of harmonious balance and content. Being an avid music lover, who knew more names of tracks than words to express herself, Shai spent her childhood amidst her mum’s singing and dad’s record collection during her teenage years. Hailing from Kolkata, a city rich in both traditional and western music culture, she moved to Bangalore in 2015 in pursuit of a new job and musical experiences.
She spent the next few years enriching her love for music by finding new ways to be involved in the music industry as a curator, artist manager, and programmer. While most of her friends working in the music industry always appreciated her music taste, coaxing her to DJ, she began realizing her potential. This led her to explore music as a listener, follower, preacher, curator, enthusiast, and finally a DJ. Her audience always expects a unique style of storytelling where she’s bridging the gap between deep and melodic house, tech house, and electronica. Her sets are forward-thinking, melodic, vocal dance floor-centric.
