What Are Gain And Volume? What Are The Differences?

The difference between the gain and the volume can be used the same at times. But gain and volume are not the same. The two are different from each other. The Difference Between Gain and Volume can actually be explained very simply. In this article, as Now You Tech, we explained what is gain, what is volume, and what is the difference between the two.

Gain can be encountered in many different environments, from physical and digital sound cards to plug-ins that are used. When you increase the gain setting, the signal level also increases. When you increase the volume setting, the signal level also increases. This situation actually leads to the idea that gain and volume are the same.  

What is the Gain?

Gain is used to adjusting the signal level of a device or software at the point we call Input. At this point, the signal has not been processed before.

What is the Volume?

Volume is used to adjust the signal level at the Output point of the device or software. In other words, the volume is actually used to adjust the signal level that has not yet reached the output point.

For example, plug a microphone into the mixer channel. With the gain adjustment, you will be able to adjust the level at the entry point. Then the signal first passes through the insert point and then passes through the compressor. This signal processed by the compressor will reach the fader in the channel. If you can fine-tune the gain level with the fader, you’ll be able to handle the signal level to be processed. So we can say that this is the main difference between gain and volume.

Difference Between Gain and Volume

The most important difference between gain and volume is actually the gain setting. It will also affect the functioning of the Signal processors used at the insert point. Suppose there is a Compressor located at the insert point. When you increase or decrease the gain level, there will be a change in the signal level reaching the compressor. Therefore, the response of the compressor to the signal will also change accordingly. The channel’s fader will actually come later than the insert point. Therefore, a change in the fader with the volume will not actually affect how the compressor works.
